COUNTRY HOE DOWN

Saturday, June 6, 2009 High Noon to 6pm

Though the weather was unseasonably cold and rainy (for LA!), it didn't stop 150 cowboy ad cowgirl animal lovers from "roughing it" out on the farm to enjoy our 2009 COUNTRY HOE DOWN! The day started with sanctuary tours, where guests had a chance to meet our farmed animal friends, and enjoy our beautiful sanctuary. After mingling with the critters, we all gathered in the sanctuary gazebo to hear from some of our movement's most noted authors and advocates, including:

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson is a prolific writer and scholar, and we, and animals everywhere, are grateful he is using his tremendous talent and acclaim to help bring awareness to the plight of animals. His international best selling book, When Elephants Weep, woke the nation to the emotional lives of animals. Jeffrey has written a total of ten books to educate and enlighten, and his newest book, The Face on Your Plate: The Truth about Food, will without question, bring us closer to the day when all animals are free, because the simply deserve to be free.

Erik Marcus is the publisher of Vegan.com, a comprehensive website with recipes, articles and an online store for great (but sometimes hard to find) vegan products. Marcus is the author of the newly released book, The Ultimate Vegan Guide, a book that covers all aspects of vegan living. The Ultimate Vegan Guide is perfect for the person contemplating veganism and even offers seasoned vegans new and easy health and living tips. He is also the author of Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, & Money, and Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating. He is a 1991 graduate of Columbia University.

Tina Volpe is the author of the book "The Fast Food Craze, Wreaking Havoc on Our Bodies and Our Animals". Volpe has just co-authored (with Judy Carman) a new book, to be released in Spring 2009, titled "The Missing Peace, The Hidden Power of Our Kinship With Animals," published by Dreamriver Press. She is a health researcher, 30 + year vegetarian, speaker, educator, consultant, television guest appearing all over the country, radio host of the top rated show "Wake Up America" on GlobalTalk Radio.

Thanks to our dedicated and knowledgeable COUNTRY HOE DOWN speakers, guests were inspired to promote veganism in every way possible, to reach people who often seem unreachable, and to remember that compassion begins on your plate. THANK YOU Erik, Tina, and Jeffrey, from ALL of us at Animal Acres.

COUNTRY HOE DOWN guests enjoyed a Vegeque cookout with grilled veg burgers and brats, potato salad, green salad, and carrot cake, thanks to our generous COUNTRY HOE DOWN SPONSORS: Gardenburger, Turtle Island Foods, Follow Your Heart, Real Food Daily, and Veggie Grill. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the compassionate corporations who made our COUNTRY HOE DOWN possible - and delicious!

Special thanks also to our dedicated team of 36 COUNTRY HOE DOWN volunteers. We could not have hosted this event without YOU - from staffing gates, to conducting tours, to selling t-shirts, to parking cars, to cooking up veggie burgers! - each and every job was vital to the success of the COUNTRY HOE DOWN. We are very grateful that we can count on such a dedicated group of advocates to make Animal Acres educational events possible - THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts and hooves!
