My time as an intern at Animal Acres was one of the best experiences of my life. It sounds cliché, but it's true. I was able to work hands on with the animals every day in many different capacities. From mucking stalls (not so much fun), to helping administer medication, to bottle feeding a calf, to just spending my free time hanging out with the animals (the best!) I was also able to learn about the plight of abused farm animals and really took it to heart. I realized I was passionate not only about animals, but the issues of abuse and neglect they face. One of my very favorite parts was being able to watch surgeries. I got to watch castrations of goats and sheep (it sounds gross, but it's actually very interesting), the removal of a sheep's eye, and the necropsy (autopsy) of a sheep. Another of my favorite aspects was getting to work closely with a variety of different animals. I got to work with emus, cows, goats, chickens, sheep, ducks, geese, turkeys and pigs. I ended up discovering a special place in my heart for chickens. One in particular I fell in love with was a Rhode Island Red hen named Sybilla. I was also the first person to discover a new born baby goat in one of the stalls. It was so amazing. I also got to name her. I called her Delilah. By the end of my time at Animal Acres I new the names of all the goats, sheep, cows and pigs (around 75 total.) I grew very close not only to all the animals but the people, too. I really felt at home there. If anyone has an opportunity to join the Animal Acres family for a short or long period of time, I highly recommend it. It was an awesome experience for me and will be for anyone who decides to become an intern at Animal Acres.
Animal Acres urgently needs CARPENTERS, PLUMBERS, and ELECTRICIANS to help complete several sanctuary building projects and maintain the sanctuary facilities. If you can help with any of these needed special services, please call or email us to set up your sanctuary project.
