Joee, safe and sound at Animal Acres
Joee was taken from a Kansas farm by a UCLA student who wanted to use the calf as a "fraternity prank". She was driven with her legs tied all the way from Kansas to California, and then tied to the front of the fraternity, and left without food or water. The fraternity was going to take the calf to a livestock auction, but fortunately, a caring individual called Los Angeles Animal Services, and a humane officer confiscated the calf and brought her to Animal Acres. We are now working with LAS and UCLA authorities to penalize the students involved -- including possible suspension and the filing of cruelty charges.
Joee's rescue would not have been possible without dedicated Animal Acres members who contributed to our Emergency Rescue Fund last year. Last year, we rescued 213 suffering farmed animals, found loving forever homes for 110 animals - and spent over $25,000 on emergency rescue and care costs.
Ducks arrive at Animal Acres
Now we need your help to raise funding for emergency rescue efforts this year - costs such as veterinary treatments and supplies, feed and housing for rescued animals, and emergency animal transport.
Your donation will help us reach our 2010 Emergency Rescue Fund Goal of $25,000 - so we are ready to respond immediately when suffering farmed animals need our help. Because of the economy, more and more farmed animals are being abandoned and left to starve to death. LA county and city shelters are receiving a record number of farmed animals, and these agencies rely on Animal Acres to provide emergency placement services.
In 2009, Animal Acres took in over a hundred pigs, sheep, ducks, goats, horses, and chickens from Los Angeles Animal Services, Orange County Animal Control, Santa Monica Animal Control, San Gabriel Humane Society, Ventura County Animal Control, LA County Department of Animal Care & Control, Riverside County Animal Control, San Bernardino County Animal Control, and other agencies that relied on Animal Acres for emergency placement needs. Until Animal Acres opened, abused and neglected farmed animals who were seized by humane enforcement agencies were often sent to auctions or "backyard butchers" to be sold for slaughter.
Ventura County Animal Services
brings us a new friend
Fortunately, now there is a place for abused and neglected farmed animals to go - a sanctuary with nourishing food, straw-filled barns, and tender-loving care. But rescuing and providing safe refuge for the refugees of the meat, dairy, and egg industries costs a great deal of money, and our only source of funding is YOU. Please, be a farmed animal rescuer this year. Please,
